The U.S. women’s floor exercise team lost their bronze medal, but Romania was able to reclaim it

International Olympic Committee officials announced on August 11 that the bonus points for the post-competition change of United States players in the women’s free gymnastics final had been invalidated, which resulted in the United States losing the bronze medal in free gymnastics and the Romanian team retaining it.

Ana Barbosu of Romania will reclaim the bronze medal from the IOC, according to a statement from the IOC. We are in contact with the Romanian Olympic Committee to discuss the medal redistribution ceremony and with the United States Olympic Committee to discuss the return of the bronze medals.

In the women’s floor exercise final on August 5, Brazil’s Andrade won the gold medal and United States’ Biles won the silver. Romania’s Ana Balbosu, who was originally third with 13.700 points, won the bronze medal. After the United States appealed the score, Jordan Chillis of the United States, who was originally fifth, moved to third place and won the bronze medal by improving his difficulty score from 13.666 to 13.766.

The Romanian Gymnastics Federation subsequently filed a complaint with the International Court of Arbitration for Sport. The Court of Arbitration for Sport ruled on Saturday that the United States team’s appeal on the spot exceeded the one-minute time limit allowed by the International Gymnastics Federation, and that the appeal was filed at 1:04 after the score was announced. The appeal was therefore dismissed, and Romania was awarded the gold medal. The US team was relegated to silver and China was awarded bronze. As a result, the Court of Arbitration for Sport said the original ranking order should be restored, with Romania’s Barbosu third and the United States’ Jordan Chilis fifth.

The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) then issued a statement revising the final results, with Balbosu finishing third with a bronze medal.
